What is Día de los Muertos?
Día de los Muertos is a Latin American holiday aimed at celebrating and honoring the lives of deceased loved ones (family, friends, or even celebrities!). It is typically celebrated on November 1st and 2nd.
People celebrate the Dia de los Muertos, a time when the souls of the deceased can return to the world of the living to partake in ofrendas (offerings) made by their living loved ones.
How do we celebrate?
Family and friends gather in a potluck-style celebratory gathering to build an altar with ofrendas (offerings) for the deceased. Ofrendas are composed of food, drinks, and items the deceased enjoyed in life, as well as traditional elements such as flowers, candles, and a picture of the person(s) whose life we are celebrating. Family and friends get to enjoy the ofrenda as well!
