What does a career in research look like outside of academia? This talk explores the growing field of applied research within public safety, with a focus on how evidence-based practices are shaping modern policing.

Drawing from her experience supervising a research unit at the Tucson Police Department, Jenna Layla Aldulaimi will share her career journey and educational path that led her into applied research. She will provide an inside look at how policy researchers partner with law enforcement to inform strategy, evaluate programs, and drive data-informed decision-making.

Attendees will gain an understanding of this unique, novel career path in applied research, the educational backgrounds that support entry into the field, and common misconceptions about working outside of academia. The talk will also highlight lessons learned on the job, including challenges and unexpected insights that come with conducting research in real-world environments.

In addition, the session will emphasize the importance of gaining hands-on experience through internships and externships, including Jenna’s personal experiences, and will offer practical advice for students looking to strengthen their competitiveness in the job market. Opportunities for undergraduate involvement in applied research at the Tucson Police Department will also be discussed.
