Designing Interventions to Promote Cognition and Learning Across the Lifespan
While there is accumulating evidence for the efficacy of targeted cognitive interventions, there have been persistent inconsistencies, some of which have been attributed to a lack of participant engagement and failures to consider individual interests, strengths, and abilities. I will summarize the results of several studies completed by our group targeting individuals across the lifespan. These studies aimed at maximizing participant motivation and persistence in cognitive training. In particular, I will summarize several studies that have focused on testing the benefits of gamifying experiences, uncovering their effects on engagement, learning, and transfer. I will also introduce our work that has embedded motivational coaching within cognitive interventions to maximize persistence, and ultimately, learning and transfer. Finally, I will present ongoing work where we integrate executive function training within visual arts and music activities to create meaningful experiences that might impact domains beyond cognition, including well-being and quality of life. Collectively, our studies illustrate ways how cognitive interventions could be designed to captivate participants’ interests, capitalize on individuals’ strengths, address their needs, and ultimately, promote real-world outcomes.
