Welcome

Welcome! I’m Christy Ball, an Associate Professor of Practice in the Department of Psychology at the University of Arizona. As a career track faculty member, my work focuses on teaching, mentoring, and student success, with a special emphasis on helping undergraduates explore and prepare for careers in psychology and beyond. I design and lead engaging, career-focused courses that center on real-world skill building and student development. I’m deeply invested in fostering inclusive, supportive learning environments both in and outside the classroom.

Teaching

My teaching philosophy is grounded in applied learning, career exploration, and graduate school preparedness. I strive to create courses that not only deepen students’ understanding of psychology but also connect directly to their personal and professional goals. I teach a range of applied and developmental topics including Career & Professional Development, Graduate School Prep, Psychology of Leadership, Health Psychology, and the Undergraduate Psychology Exploration Program. By embedding career competencies and hands-on learning into my classes, I help students see the value of their education beyond the classroom. I prioritize clarity, structure, and inclusivity, aiming to build a learning environment where all students feel seen, supported, and challenged.

Service is a meaningful extension of my teaching and mentoring work. I serve as the Faculty Advisor for the University of Arizona chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, where I support student leadership and help coordinate events that promote academic and professional development. I am an active member of the Psychology Department’s Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, contributing to decisions that shape and strengthen our academic offerings. I also organize and lead career and professional development events that connect students with resources, alumni, and applied learning opportunities. In addition to group programming, I provide ongoing one-on-one mentorship for undergraduates applying to graduate school, often supporting students through every step of the process. These service roles allow me to foster community, advocate for students’ needs, and help prepare the next generation of psychology professionals.

Scholarship

My scholarship focuses on enhancing student success through the intentional integration of career readiness competencies into undergraduate psychology curricula. Drawing on frameworks such as NACE’s eight career competencies and principles of backward design and high-impact practices, my work explores how faculty can embed these essential skills across course levels, from introductory to applied learning experiences. I share practical, research-informed strategies that empower students to connect academic content with real-world professional expectations, helping to close the preparedness gap between college and career. My recent presentations highlight scalable methods such as reflective assessments, real-world assignments, and departmental initiatives that equip students with the tools for lifelong career growth and workforce contribution.
