Shortly after taking his first academic position at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Professor Sales founded the first Law and Psychology Graduate and Post-Doctoral Training Program, which was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health. After eight years on the Nebraska faculty as a Professor of Psychology and Law, he joined the faculty at the University of Arizona where he is Professor of Psychology, Sociology, Psychiatry, and Law, and directs its Psychology, Policy and Law Program.

Doctor of Science Degree (honoris causa)
from The City University of New York for being “...the founding father of forensic psychology as an academic discipline ...[and] [i]n recognition of his outstanding contributions to mental health law and public policy, and to the field of forensic psychology, ... .”
