Bootzin, Richard R. Professor
Program: Clinical Psychology, Cognition and Neural Systems Second Program: Cognitive Psychology Year of affiliation: 1987 Year of doctor degree: 1968 School: Purdue University
I teach Sleep and Sleep Disorders (Psyc 478/578), Abnormal Psychology (Psych 381) and principles of behavior therapy in the graduate intervention course (Psych 625a). My primary research areas are cognitive processing during sleep and understanding the treatment of insomnia. I direct the sleep research laboratory in the Psychology Department. If you see bleary-eyes students walking around the Psychology building, they are probably research assistants who stayed up all night monitoring the sleep of paricipants in the study. I also direct the Insomnia clinic of The University of Arizona Sleep Disorders Center at the University Medical Center. Thus, I am fortunate to be involved in both the clinical and research sides of sleep. My favorite animal is the echidna (the spiny anteater), the only mammal that does not have rapid-eye-movement sleep, and one of my major achievements is that an episode on insomnia of the Doogie Howser show was based on my work--and they even mentioned me.
