I received my Ph.D. in clinical and developmental psychology from the University of Illinois in 1976, and completed an intership in clinical neuropsychology at Rush-Presbyterian-St.Luke's Medical Center in Chicago.
I am currently Director of Clinical Neuropsychology at University Medical Center, and and a Professor in the departments of Psychology, Neurology, and Psychiatry at The University of Arizona.
My undergraduate teaching includes courses on the psychology of consciousness and the psychology of aging and adult development. My graduate teaching involves basic and applied courses in human neuropsychology. My published work focuses primarily on neuropsychological aspects of aging and age-related disorders of the central nervous system, particularly Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.
Current research interests include aging and the neuropsychology of consciousness (particualrly self-awareness), the nature of brain systems subserving different aspects of emotion, and aging effects upon the different roles of frontal and hippocampal brain systems in memory.
Personal interests include hiking, meditation practice, and reading in Buddhist and other Eastern Philosophies. I have served on the editorial boards of several journals in neuropsychology and gerontological psycholgy, and have been an advisor to several national institutes and agencies concearned with aging and Alzheimer's disease. In addition to other current appointments, I serve as a member of the Panel on Dementia Screening of the U.S. Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR), and am a past President of the Section on Clinical Geropsychology (Division of Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.
