Charles Epstein Award from the National Down Syndrome Society, which will provide 2 years of support for her project entitled, "Beyond 21: Factors affecting neuropsychological development in Down Syndrome." Congratulations Jamie! (04-27-2009)

- Congratulations to Dr. Cecile McKee and Katrina Nicholas! They
recently received an NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant.
Katrina's dissertation project is entitled, "Psycholinguistic studies
of prepositions in English and Icelandic." She is tentatively going

- Congratulations to graduate student Laura Kirsch, who was recently awarded second place in this year's American Psychology-Law Society's (APLS) Dissertation Award competition. The award will be presented at a ceremony at the upcoming conference in March, where Laura will be presenting her research as a poster. (01-29-2009)
- Congratulations to Jim Cavanagh! He recently received an NRSA Fellowship Award from NIH for his project titled, "How Stress Alters Neural Systems of Reinforcement: A Model of Depressive Etiology." (09-08-2008)
- Congratulations to Drs. Andrea Chambers and Maria Marquine, 2008 co-winners of the Gwen Weiner Dissertation Award. This award is funded by Ms. Gwen Weiner, a member of the SBS Advisory Council, for an outstanding thesis by a student in clinical psychology. The Dissertation Award is selected based on the quality of the empirical research and the study's relevance to the treatment or understanding of clinical disorders. Dr. Marquine's dissertation is entitled: Self-knowledge and self-referential processing in memory disorders: Implications for neuropsychological rehabilitation. Dr. Chambers's dissertation is entitled: Relaxation during pregnancy to reduce stress and anxiety and their associated complications. Congratulations to our two winders of this inaugural award! - Psychology Professor Terry Daniel and Assistant Professor Reid Fontaine were both successful in their competition for a 2008/2009 Udall Center Fellowship. Dr. Daniel's award was one of two Udall fellowships offered by the Institute for the Study of Planet Earth (ISPE), and Dr. Fontaine's award was one of two offered by Dean Ed Donnerstein and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The fellowships provide for one semester's release from teaching to pursue policy-related research and scholarship. (04-17-2008)
- Antisocial Behavior and Decision Making Linked
Research on teenagers has found that there may be a link between the withdrawn nature of some and the decisions they make. The newly published findings are based on research led by Reid G. - Professor Dick Bootzin, will be receiving the Sleep Research Society 2008 Mary A. Carskadon Outstanding Educator Award at the opening ceremonies at the Society meeting in June, 2008. (03-25-2008)
- Two of our outstanding psychology graduate students have been successful in competition for research grants from the college Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Institute:
Siobhan Hoscheidt has been awarded a pre-doctoral graduate research grant, and Chun-Yu Lin has been awarded a dissertation research grant. (03-17-2008)
- Arezu Corella, Psychology's Academic Advising Coordinator has won two prestigious UA awards: the UA Program for Excellence in Advising, Professional Advisor Award; and the University Staff Award for Excellence. (03-14-2008)
- The Department of Psychology has been selected to receive the 2008 Provost's Meritorious Departmental Achievement in Undergraduate Education Aware, which will be presented at the UA Awards of Distinction ceremony on April 16, 2008. (02-19-2008)
- Dr. Matthias Mehl was listed as one of the ten most cited assistant professors in social psychology, in the most recent issue of Dialogue, the newsletter of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, within an article reporting on an empirical analysis of the quality of graduate programs in social psychology. - In the 11/12/07 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education, the third annual Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index was published, rating and ranking 173 disciplines. Overall, the U. of A., not surprisingly, did quite well, with several departments and programs within the top ten nationally.

- Psychology Professor Mary Peterson has recently been elected Chair of the Governing Board of the Psychonomic Society for 2009! She will be Chair-Elect in 2008, then Chair in 2009, then Past-Chair in 2010. The Psychonomic Society is a prestigious scientific organization that promotes the communication of scientific research in psychology and allied sciences, and has approximately 2,500 current members. Membership in the Psychonomic Society requires a significant research publication record and nomination by a Society member. (10-26-2007)
- Psychology Distinguished Professor John Allen was recently elected President-Elect of the Society for Psychophysiological Research (SPR). SPR was founded in 1960, and is an international scientific society with a membership of over 800 worldwide. (10-25-2007)

The Department of Psychology integrates its teaching and research missions in a variety of ways. Our undergraduate major, one of the largest at the university, focuses on providing students with a solid grounding in research methods, and broad exposure to two domains: (1) Cognition and Neural Systems and (2) Individual and Social Processes. Our graduate program includes concentrations in clinical, social, evolutionary psychology, cognition and neural systems, and in psychology, policy and law.
